Dr. Doria graduated Magna cum Laude from University of Perugia in 1990. He was resident in general surgery at University of Perugia from 1990 to 1995. He completed a research fellowship in small bowel transplantation at the University Of Pittsburgh Transplantation Institute and a clinical fellowship in multi-organ transplantation at the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute of the University Of Pittsburgh. Dr. Doria is PhD in immunology.
Cataldo Doria, MD, is Associate Professor of Surgery at Jefferson Medical College - Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA. He is also the Interim Director, Division of Transplantation at the same Institution. Dr. Doria is a multi-organ transplant surgeon who has extensive expertise in cadaveric and living related liver and kidney transplant, pancreas transplant, small-bowel transplant as well as liver and pancreatic resection and surgery of the bile duct.
Dr. Doria comes to Jefferson from the Mediterranean Institute for Transplantation and Advanced Specialized Therapies (IsMeTT- UPMC Italy) -- a partnership between the University Of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Italian National Government-- where he served as Chief of Abdominal Organ Transplant. This is a multiorgan transplant program which was developed from ground to operational by Dr. Doria and co-workers. From 1999 to 2003 in his capacity, Dr. Doria performed the first liver transplantation, the first live donor nephrectomy and the first live donor hepatectomy and liver transplantation ever done in Sicily - Italy.
He also served as Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine and at the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center of Pittsburgh, PA. His research interests include issues in liver transplantation, use of artificial liver, and treatment of pancreatic and liver tumors.
Dr. Doria's biography has been listed in Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in America. Dr. Doria, in year 2005 has been named Honorary President of the Italian Association for Organ Donation of the Province of Taranto. Dr. Doria is author of 141 publications: A) 48 refereed articles; B) 20 proceedings of conference and symposia, 1 monograph, 4 book chapters; C) 67 published abstracts; D) 1 other publication. Dr. Doria is a course director of a CME program approved by Jefferson Medical College. This course consists of a weekly Journal Club. Dr. Doria is Principal Investigator and co-Investigator of numerous research studies all listed in the full version of his CV.
Dr. Doria is a member of numerous professional and scientific societies including the Cell Transplant Society, the Academy of Surgical Research, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the Italian Association Professors of Surgery, the Transplantation Society, the Italian Society of Surgery, the International Liver Transplantation Society, the European Society for Organ Transplantation, the American Society of Transplantation, and the International College of Surgeons (United States Section), American Society of Transplant Surgeons, The Association for Academic Surgery. Dr. Doria serves as the Associate Editor of the American Society of Transplantation Newsletter and as an “ad hoc” reviewer for the American Journal of Transplantation, Critical Care Medicine, Blood Coagulation & Fibrinolysis, American Journal of Kidney Diseases, Critical Care.
Dr. Doria is, currently, Regent for the state of Pennsylvania of the International College of Surgeons – United States Section; member of the American Society of Transplantation Website Development Committee; member of the Medical Advisory Committee of the American Liver Foundation, Delaware Valley Chapter; member of the End of Life Task Force established by the Society of Critical Care Medicine; member of the Finance Committee of the OPTN/UNOS (United Network Organ Sharing); member of the Legislative Committee of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons.
